Endocrine Society Takes a Stance: Get Rid of BPA
by Phyllis Wheeler ~ June 17th, 2009.The Endocrine Society, a professional scientific organization for hormone researchers, is taking up lobbying.
For the first time in its 93-year-history, the organization issued a scientific statement a few days ago and declared its itention to engage in lobbying. The subject of both the statement and the lobbying is their hope to “decrease human exposure” to BPA and other endocrine-disrupting agents.
BPA is a plastics additive in the clear bottles commonly used to package bottled water and soda, as well as in lining tin cans. It is known to leach into water and into human bodies. Animal studies have raised a host of questions about its safety.
At issue is the FDA’s stance that BPA is safe in “low” doses, permitting its use in food and drink packaging. The new head of the FDA has said this policy is now under review.
In the statement, the Endocrine Society called for further research.
I don’t know about you, but I think this is more reason to avoid bottled water and use a home water filter like Multi-Pure’s outstanding and durable filters.
