Dr. Joseph Mercola, a well-known advocate for health, bases his opinions on plenty of research. So what does he think about the water we drink?

Dr. Joseph Mercola, a well-known advocate for health, bases his opinions on plenty of research. So what does he think about the water we drink?

First of all, most of us don’t drink enough water. We get symptoms of mild dehydration that include weight gain, high cholesterol, premature aging, heartburn and constipation.

Tap water isn’t the answer. It’s got traces of contaminants that include arsenic (obviously bad for you), aluminum (which can cause a variety of problems including learning problems in children, Parkinson’s, and liver disease), disinfection byproducts from using chlorine that are carcinogenic, flouride, and more.

Bottled water? Forty percent of it is simply tap water. Add the plastics chemicals like BPA, and you’re ingesting some stuff that’s genuinely bad for you, not to mention bad for the landfills.

Distilled water? Not good for you. Period.

Alkaline water? Useful for detoxification for a short term. Period.

Vitamin waters? They contain high-fructose corn syrup, and are just about as bad for you as soda, causing weight gain and delivering plastics chemicals from the bottle.

Filtered tap water? It’s the way to go. Carbon block filters, possibly combined with reverse osmosis or ion exchange, provide the safe water we need.

Mercola says he’s going to be launching a line of high-performing water filters.

Now, I think he ought to be promoting Multi-Pure, the best filters, certified by NSF, that are available. I am sure that whatever his line of filters will be, it won’t perform any better than Multi-Pure.

So, consider his argument! Take a look at the home water filters available, and you’ll agree that Multi-Pure does the best job and is guaranteed for life (provided you change the filters on schedule).

The EcoMatters Daily has posted an article on plastics additive bisphenol A, BPA, calling it “the new asbestos.” The article contains tips on how and why to avoid BPA.

“Plastic containers have a code printed on them– a number from 1 to 7– and a classification of the plastic itself. In this case we’re on the lookout for #3s and #7s with the letters PVC and PC (respectively) underneath.” This probably includes the large bottle of water supplying water for your office, and probably also the smaller bottles being used for bottled water and soda, I might add. (The Nalgene people and their competitors have pretty much cleaned up their acts, for newer bottles.)

Of course, the next thing to worry about is that BPA is in canned food cans, as a liner. So try to avoid eating food from cans–buy food held in glass containers, when possible.

“The bad news is, unlike take-out containers and sports bottles, there’s no way to know if your pre-packaged food is being infused with synthetic estrogen. And though the FDA has finally admitted that BPA isn’t a tasty, healthy additive (or whatever the hell they used to think), and may actually be a danger, there are no plans as of yet to ban the chemical or require manufacturers to disclose its use.

“The water cooler is easy. Here goes… DRINK TAP WATER.”

The author then recommends that you get a filter, just like the filtered tap water you used to buy in plastic bottles. He comments that the water filter doesn’t remove BPA.

I’d like to point out that there’s no BPA to remove, if the water hasn’t been in a BPA-containing bottle.

Consider getting a Multi-Pure home water filter, the best product out there with a proven record and golden guarantees, costing you just 8 cents per gallon. And take a look at the EcoMatters Daily article here: http://ecomattersdaily.com/2010/02/bisphenol-a-its-the-new-asbestos-and-its-everywhere/

Study Finds Significant Unregulated Chemicals in Tap Water

There are plenty of chemicals that the EPA requires municipalities to check on and limit in their water supplies. But there are more and more chemicals found in our water that aren’t on this list. As a result, an advocacy group is very concerned about the safety of women and children in America.

Olga Naidenko, Ph.D. is a senior scientist with Environmental Working Group of Washington, D.C. She addressed a letter to the EPA in August, 2008 (www.ewg.org/node/27005). On behalf of her advocacy group, she told the EPA that it should be setting water regulations that protect pregnant women and children from chemicals in drinking water.

The current EPA system involves listing questionable chemicals, including prescription drugs and agricultural chemicals, and then deciding not to regulate the bulk of them. She charged the EPA with “shielding toxic water pollutants from regular scrutiny,” using this listing process.

She listed eleven significant contaminants currently exempt from EPA regulations. The EPA, she said, claimed that none of the contaminants “were found nationally at levels of public health concern in public water systems.”

But the EWG study team discovered significant levels of exposure to four toxins, in reviewing EPA data. It found that dacthal, a herbicide, contaminated water served to 486,000 people in six states. In addition the study found significant exposures to aldrin, a neurotoxic form of dieldrin, and to soil fumigant 1,3-dichloropropene.

In addition, a USGS study by Kolpin and others in 2002 (Environmental Science Technology 36(6)) showed that veterinary and human antibiotics, as well as prescription and nonprescription drug and anti-microbial compounds, are frequently found in our streams, said Naidenko. Many of these streams serve as important sources of drinking water. These potent compounds are all unregulated at this time, wrote Naidenko.

We’ve found out that toxins and prescription drugs are in our water supply. The best protection available for your family is a triple-carbon filter, proven to get rid of many toxins, yet holding onto the essential minerals needed for health. Check into home water filters, especially the durable, high-flow, triple-carbon filters made by Multi-Pure.
